Although the basic pan/tray is affordable it is not functional. Usually made of porus plastic that will trap and hold odor and moisture. Not a long lasting product. Liners are usually required. But the biggest concern with this type of litterbox is that there is not protection from spraying litter. Your cats natural instincts become your worst mess. Finally, most of the litter that ends up on the floor gets swept into the garbage, wasting unused litter.
